Why Stay Away From “Copy Cat” Wedding Gowns?

by Dawn Quick of The Wedding Place
There they are….. all over the internet….they are photographs of gorgeous wedding gowns offered at fraction of the prices that you have just seen in your favorite bridal salon. What is the difference? Is the bridal store just charging too much? Sometimes the photographs are the same as you’ve seen on the designer’s web page. What could be the problem in ordering in the comfort of your own home? What’s really going on here?
OK, here’s the not so pretty part of wedding gowns. Someone in China has illegally copied a designers photo to their web site. The site promises you a dress that looks like the one you fell in love with at your bridal shop, all at tremendous savings, sometimes hundreds of dollars. You’re looking for any corner to cut the costs of your wedding, what do you have to loose? After all, the web page says that you can return it if you don’t like it.
Ok, you’ve given them your credit card information and paid in full to place your order. Weeks go by and your gown arrives. You open the box and the wrinkled item in there bears little resemblance to the gorgeous gown you saw that the real manufacturer made. It doesn’t fit and the fabric isn’t even suitable for one of those yard flags. You have $400 tied up in a gown that you’d never wear! You could return it and hope they return your money, you could sell it to another unsuspecting soul online and you probably could only get $100 for it, if you’re lucky!
Another scenario could also happen here. This could be a big bridal store somewhere selling you the original gown. What could be the problem then? Well, the site may be gone after you give them your credit card information. Even it the site is still there, that doesn’t mean you’ll get your dream gown. The real manufacturer may have found out what they are doing and closed their account. (Real bridal manufacturers don’t look kindly on these practices and have requirements of what kind of stores can represent their merchandise and none of them approve of selling wedding gowns or bridesmaids gowns on the internet!) Now you are out the money and still have no dress that you’d wear for one of the most important days of your life!
If you’re lucky, you get your money back…that’s if you’re lucky. You’re still out the time you waited for this treasure. Now you have to buy a real gown at a real store. Now you may have wasted enough time that you’ll get the chance to pay a rush fee. So much for saving money!
But, how should have know this could happen to you? You’ve never shopped for a wedding gown before. Since you’re reading this article, that shows that you want to take the time to do your research. That’s step one! You do research when you buy a car or a house or any other major purchase. You should do this on your wedding plans too. The internet is a great place to do some wedding “looking for ideas.” There are all kind of photos and things with just the click of a mouse! When you are ready to make a purchase, go to the professionals. It will cost you less in the long run!
How to Avoid the Top 10 Mistakes Made by Engaged Couples

By Dawn Quick of The Wedding Place
3. The “I can do it all myself” mentality: Delegate to trustworthy friends and family members. You do the same things for them. Don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed.
4. No Budget or an Unreasonable One: Set a flexible idea of what you want to spend on what. Point #2 comes into play again by identifying what is most important to you.
5. Disastrous Vendors: You get one chance to do this right! Check references and other happy brides. This point can’t be overestimated! Surround yourself with professionals. A good rule of thumb is don’t hire friends or relatives unless you would hire them if they weren’t your friends or relatives!
6. Verbal and Written Agreements: If you are paying someone a deposit or a retainer, have a contract in writing so each party can know what you can expect from the other. It must be dated and signed.
7. Getting Too Much Input from Others: Each person you know will have their own idea of how you should do things. Chances are that each person you know will have different taste than yours exactly. This is your day. You only get to do this once and it should be what you want, not what others want. Point to remember…. Trying to please everybody will please no one, especially you and your groom!
8. Becoming Bridezilla: Don’t make every daily moment about you and the wedding. You friends have lives too. Don’t obsess about your wedding. Don’t be a control freak. This goes back to hiring the right vendors and treating others with respect. If you follow those rules, things tend to fall into place.
9. Lack of Communication: Assuming things will happen a certain way will never work! Expecting things to just fall into place like you had in your head and not getting those ideas across to others is disaster looking for a place to happen. Do whatever communication suits your style best. A wedding web page, phone calls, email blast updates. Never assume!
10. Not Taking Time for Yourself and Your Groom: Wedding are VERY important events and should not be underestimated. However, there is something more important and that is your marriage. Take time for yourself as a couple and don’t get lost in the wedding itself. This is the start of your “happily ever after!” Don’t forget to enjoy the process!
