Patty Martone Introduces Extraordinary Fort Wayne Women Presentation
December 17, 2008 by · Leave a Comment
by Mary True of the History Center
Join us at the History Center on Sunday, January 4th, at 2:00 PM, as Dr. Patty Martone presents “Fort Wayne Women Who Have Broken the Mold.” This free lecture is part of the 2008 George R. Mather Sunday Lecture Series, and is sponsored by The Dunsire Family Foundation.
Retired educator Patty Martone introduces you to a cluster of Fort Wayne women who have made a significant impact in our community. From the early Fort to the present city-scene, these adventurous change agents have “broken the mold.” These extraordinary women went where women were not expected to go, did what women were not expected to do, and in the end, opened up the realm of infinite possibilities for women. “Beyond ’sugar and spice and all that is nice’ are driven, highly motivated, successful Fort Wayne women,” says Martone. “They have melted the mold and shattered the ceiling with gusto and reached out toward greatness.”
Martone is a Fort Wayne native and a former assistant superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools. She has won numerous awards and honors, including Fort Wayne Citizen of the Year, Fort Wayne First Woman, Allen County Woman of the Year, and Sagamore of the Wabash.
The History Center is located at 302 East Berry Street, Fort Wayne, and the facility is handicap accessible. For more information, call (260) 426-2882, or visit our website.
Set Your Wedding Budget
December 15, 2008 by · Leave a Comment
By Denise M. Jordan of Kiss Wedding and Event Planning, Inc.
Just got engaged? Congratulations! You’ve shared the news with your family and friends — now what? What do you do next?
Suezette Ford, Consultant and Coordinator for Kiss Wedding and Event Planning Inc., advises, “Set your budget. The budget determines the kind of wedding you can have. It affects the location, the number of guests. It even affects the kind of meal you can serve. You’ve got to set the budget before you start planning.”
Creating the budget first makes sense. It is so easy to get caught up in the romance and excitement of planning a wedding that one can forget there is a price tag attached. And, with popular television shows like Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, Platinum Weddings, and the current emphasis on celebrity weddings, weddings are becoming more elaborate and more costly. Industry statistics indicate that the average U.S. couple spends about $28,800 on their wedding. In the Fort Wayne area that figure is slightly lower at $25,340. However, there are brides whose pockets aren’t that deep.
“Each bride can have a beautiful day, no matter what the budget,” says Suezette Phillips, Creative Designer for Kiss. The most important thing is choosing where to spend the money. After we consult with the bride and find out what matters most to her, we can advise her on that.”
Creating a budget is the only way you can realistically plan for your wedding and more importantly, it’s the only way to keep from overspending. Find out who will be contributing to the wedding fund and how much they are willing to contribute. Whereas the bride’s family traditionally bears most of the wedding expenses, that does not have to be the case. The groom’s family or other family members may want to help. Each couple’s situation is different so explore all the possibilities. Once you know how much you have to work with, then you can begin to plan. At that point, you should hire a wedding consultant.
One of the many references the wedding consultant should have at his or her disposal is a budget worksheet. It doesn’t matter if the bride has $10,000, $50,000, or $100,000 to spend, the allocation of funds should be similar. According to Modern Bride, expect to spend about 50% of the budget on the reception, 10% on wedding attire, 10% on music, 10% on photos and video, 10% on flowers, 4% on stationary (which includes invitations, save-the-dates, and postage), and 6% on additional expenses (marriage license, bridesmaid luncheon, rehearsal dinner, attendants gifts, transportation, and church or Officiant fees). If a wedding consultant is used, his or her fee falls under “additional expenses”. Consultants often direct brides to vendors who may offer discounts based upon their relationship with the consultant. For a bride on a tight budget, these savings can be important. The consultant may prove to be the best investment the bride makes.
KISS Bride Featured in Wedding Day Magazine
December 11, 2008 by · Leave a Comment
The fall issue of Wedding Day Magazine is now available and Fort Wayne bride, Tara Swain Pervine is in it. Denise Jordan, Marketing Director for Kiss Wedding & Event Planning, worked a little magic to make that happen.
“I like to provide a little extra publicity for the brides when possible,” said Jordan. “I know what the mothers like. I can’t promise that all of our brides will be in a magazine, but I do what I can.”
“I feel like a celebrity,” offered Tara Pervine after friends in Indianapolis called to let her know her wedding announcement appeared in the Indianapolis Recorder. Fort Wayne connections had already informed her they had seen the announcement in several Fort Wayne newspapers.
“If she felt like a celebrity before, she’ll really feel like a celebrity now!” said Jordan. “The layout is gorgeous and Darnel (Miller, Starlight Photography) did a great job with the photos.” Check out the current issue of Wedding Day Magazine on-line to see for yourself.
